Statement from the Mayor – July 2022
I am delighted to take over the role as Mayor of Adlington in this special Platinum Jubilee year. Community Spirit is to be my theme for my year as Mayor.
During the difficult two years of the pandemic Adlington displayed tremendous community spirit across all age groups, examples were:
- Residents shopping for friends, neighbours, family, and strangers.
- Local businesses delivering to people who were isolating or supporting key workers.
- School teachers keeping schools open for some and delivering online lessons for others.
- Also those who did smaller more fun things that brought a smile to people’s faces, drawing a huge hopscotch on the pavement on railway road, (it’s surprising how many adults used it), organising a rainbow trail to be undertaken on daily walks.
This community spirit was on display again at the beginning of the month during our Jubilee celebrations
- Scouts serving a hotpot lunch under canvass for senior citizens.
- Guides entertaining parents and friends on their picnic.
- A Tea Dance, 2 family fun days, luncheons, afternoon teas, and a football tournament for over 200 children.
These were just some of the entertainments organised by local groups all free at the point of entry and supported in a collaboration with the two other local councils.
I want to try and highlight and enhance that Community Spirit during this coming year by engaging with all ages across Adlington and encouraging them to engage with each other, promoting opportunities for all, inspiring our younger citizens, and especially recognising the value of strong girls and strong women.
I saw on social media a few weeks ago a recent photograph from the seventies of Adlington Town Council and it was made up entirely of male members – now because of the strong women who have gone before us our council is made up of 7 women and 5 men.
I hope all residents of Adlington will join me in continuing the great community spirit in our lovely village.
Finally I would like to announce my two charities for the year these are:
The Sally Cancer Foundation set up in memory of Sally Cornes who portrayed outstanding courage and resilience during her battle with terminal cancer she was supported throughout by her family and particularly Milly Cornes her sister who was one of our young award winners last year.
We have with us today two trustees of the charity Beryl Gibson and Stephen Gibson, we look forward to supporting them and wish them every success.
Rivington and Adlington Band, an organisation which itself covers several generations of players both girls and boys, men, and women.
Our lovely band was unable to hold their usual Christmas Concert last year, so they walked the streets for nights on end playing carols right across the village showing great community spirit. We are lucky to have them, and they deserve our support.
